Why Do We Offer This Service?

Our products are available in a range of different colours and shades. These are typically provided by the manufacturer. As we have grown, and incorporated more manufacturers, as well as products including our own lines, it has been more difficult to provide consistent colours. We also find that often, clients will see a colour in one product, set their eyes on it, but want it on a different product that does not have the same colour available.

That is why we have created our Colour match service. Colour matches have been provided by many manufacturers for a number of years, but they are most common in the emulsion paint industry. Carrying out consistent, accurate colour matches for a vast number of products, that all react to colour differently, is a much more difficult undertaking.

Thankfully, with our trained experts, and through a lot of trial an error, we are now able to offer this service to all our clients. Our Colour Matches

We take colour seriously. We know that interior decoration is all about the interactions between colours and textures. Our range of products provide a texture for every type. With colour however, there is no one colour meets all, and you cannot have every colour under the rainbow ready to go (although we try). That is why when you contact us for a colour match, we will create a brand new colour that is exclusive to you. This colour will be created only in the product that you wish to have, and cannot be transferred to other products.

For us to carry out a Colour match, we require 1 of 2 things. Either, a physical sample of the colour that is to be matched. This can come in the form of a cloth, a sample from a sofa manufacturer, or really any physical object that can be feasibly presented to us in order to carry out the match.

The second way, is to provide us with a code from a reputable supplier, that we can use as guidance. We keep most colour charts and reference books in our premises, such as RAL, Pantone, British Standard Colours. If we have a copy of the colour guide from any of these companies, we can accept the match. Alternatively, we are happy for you to order a sample directly from the company and have it sent to our premises.

ITS NOT THE SAME...

What Is A Manual Colour Match?

In order to explain the value of a manual colour match, it is important to first understand what a "non-manual" colour match is. In today's industry, multiple machines exist that have sensors that help to identify colour. This includes the use of devices such as spectrophotometers that can be used to "sample" a given colour, then provide an approximate recommendation based on the light readings. The reliability of using this method to colour match can vary wildly.

The spectrophotometer is usually connected to a database of colours that the manufacturer provides. This means that the machine is not able to "create" a colour, but rather match it to the closest option from the available database. In many cases, even the closest colour to the target colour, can still be a few shades off. On top of this, using sensors and machines to match shimmery, or metallic samples is notoriously difficult in current industry. For us, the process is somewhat different. We rely on a team of trained professionals that have developed their skills and abilities over many years. They have undertaken training, understand colorimetry, and also use their experience from hundreds if not thousands of previous colour matches, to create every new colour. They understand that protectors are often involved in the application, and therefore have to create a colour that is slightly off, in order to make it become perfect once the protector is applied.

Carrying out this process for over 100 materials is no easy feat. But we are so confident that we will be able to match a given colour (Provided the material can handle the amount of pigment) that we will even offer a free revision if the client is not satisfied with the final sample presented.

Where Do I Start?

Here's How It Works...

The first step to take into consideration before requesting a Colour match, is to find the right product. We recommend browsing through our website at our selection of finishes. Its worth taking into account the environment you will be decorating. There can be limitations with this. For example, most paints cannot be applied near humid areas, such as the bathroom, or near the kitchen sink. Also, if you are looking for a floor product, Microcement is the only option from our range. Please bear in mind that we currently cannot offer our colour match service for products that are sold as POWDERS.

Once you have taken all this into consideration and selected the product you would like to have, the next step, is to decide on the colour you want. Now, each of our products has their line-up of available colours on their product page, we do recommend having a look through those in case your chosen colour (Or a similar alternative) is already available as part of the range.

We are also happy to provide a colour match based on a real life item. For us to do this, we will need you to either send us, or bring to us a sample of the colour that is to be matched. In the past, we have carried out matches to clothing items, bits of plaster from old walls and even furniture. Probably the easiest way however, is to select a colour from a well known colouring specifier such as RAL or Pantone. We keep their sample cards with us, meaning we can typically access them quite quickly.

The process...

Carrying Out The Colour Match

Once you contact us for a Colour match, a member of our team will reply with additional information about the colour you wish to go for. They will advise if there are any product specific limitations, or if perhaps there is something about the particular colour, or product that won't suit the desired effect. We will always warn you about potential discrepancies that can arise before any work is carried out. It is important for us to make sure that you understand exactly what you are paying for, before actually going forward with it. Transparency with our clients is everything. We offer our Colour match service with one key ideal in mind:

"We will not take on the task of a Colour match, if we do not believe that we can achieve it".

Once a colour match is paid, we require 3-5 working days to create the desired colour. Once we have a colour that we are happy with, we cross check the shade with at least 3 other members of the team. We know that eye fatigue and prolonged exposure to colour can alter one persons judgement on a given colour. We regularly review our own samples as part of our process, and will re-do them as many times as it takes until we get it right. We often have to go through multiple pots of material in order to re-attempt a match. As it works with these products, once the colour has leant too much in a certain direction, or becomes darker than desired, the only option is to start again.

Once we are happy with the colour that has been created, our technician will create a fairly flat, low movement, non-textured sample of the material in a board that is 600x400mm. We can apply a protector at the discretion of the client, to half the sample, in order to compare how the untreated colour will come out, when compared to a protected sample. Please inform us if you would like us to do this for you. We will happily recommend the right protector for any given material. Once the sample is completed, it can either be picked up from our showroom, or delivered directly to the client for perusal.

We know that on some occasions, our match may not be perfect, and for that reason, we offer a free revision for any match we carry out. Let us know that you were not happy with the sample, provide us some feedback as to what could be improved, and we will happily attempt the colour one more time for you. It is important to know that colour science is highly complex. Some colours can be Metameric, this means that they can appear identical under a certain light, but different under other lighting conditions. This is especially common with metallic paints due to their high reflectiveness. Once a match is approved, we will save the formula, so that it can be used for future projects, or even for repairs on the same colour in the future. From this point, you are free to purchase the amount of material needed, in your perfect shade!
