Often chosen as the continuation of the floor finish, Microcement is a popular surface solution for stairs to its seamless finish that easily fits in with contemporary interiors.
Applying Microcement on stairs can be tricky, especially for those with little to no experience. The application however follows the same procedure that it does for all other surfaces, with a few extra things to keep in mind.
Here we list the detailed steps of applying Microcement on stairs.
Benefits of Microcement on Stairs
1.Seamless Finish
Microcement is a popular finish that is often chosen for its seamless finish, and the contemporary appeal it lends to every surface it is applied to, especially if it’s across multiple surfaces which creates a uniform look. This quality can make it an excellent choice for stairs of any kind.
2.Durability
As a multi-layer coating system, combining different components, Microcement was designed to withstand the daily wear and tear, which means it’s a fantastic solution for stairs.
3.Slip resistance
Depending on the texture of the application, a slip-resistant finish can be created, for an overall safer home.
4.Aesthetic Flexibility
Microcement is a versatile material that can be bespoke and made to match any colour or design style, with various finishes and textures.
Application Process
1.Surface Preparation:
Preparing the surface before any application is essential, such as repairing and filling any cracks and cleaning any dirt or dust.
Make sure to assess the surface properly and use the right primer, depending on whether the Microcement is being applied on porous or non-porous surfaces.
2.Base Coat Application:
Applying the base coat and embedding the anti-crack system with corner beads will give the structure the decorative surface needs to ensure it’s durable and resistant enough for foot traffic. It’s important to follow the instructions and mixing ratios of the supplier, as the base coat starts hardening as soon as water is added, therefore, an efficient and quick application is important. Once the first coat is dry, apply the second coat of the base.
Once both coats are dry, remove any imperfections and smooth out the surface by sanding it lightly.

3.Decorative Coat Application:
Depending on what Microcement system you use, the decorative coat can have one or two components. Whichever one of the systems you choose, it will come with the pigments already mixed in the bucket if there is a colour chosen.
The decorative component is applied on two coats, and it is used to create the final texture and appearance of the Microcement. This layer can determine some the of functional qualities of the finish, such as its slip resistance.
4.Sealing:
Applying the sealer will ensure the Microcement will be resistant to water, stains and daily use. It usually requires at least two thin coats.
Once the sealer is applied, allow enough time for it to dry, and the Microcement system to cure, to ensure a high-quality and durable finish.

Maintenance
Regular cleaning with mild detergents can help maintain the finish on the stairs, without having to use anything that could damage the sealer.
As stairs can be a relatively high-traffic area, periodic resealing is recommended every few years, to ensure the surface protection stays intact. The frequency of resealing should depend on the level of use.
Conclusion
The use of Microcement on stairs is a great option for anyone who wants to benefit from the aesthetic and functional properties of the material. It is a popular surface solution for projects where a modern, contemporary feel is required, due to its seamless look and customisable finishes.
When maintained properly, the Microcement can last many years, offering both functionality and aesthetic appeal.
